The Rebel Artist of San Jose
Maria Repetto
The Beauty Scene · S Winchester Blvd, San Jose
There are hairstylists, and then there is Maria Repetto. Both arms sleeved, her own name on the door, and a body of work that runs from silver through copper to blue-black without once looking like a swatch book. She does not order extension hair off a shelf. She colours it herself, to the gram and the inch, until it disappears into hair she did not grow.

The work
From her chair.
All of it shot by Maria, in the chair at The Beauty Scene.
“Extensions + Color.”
Warm honey drawn down through a soft base. It falls in one piece and catches the light the whole way down.
Nothing here is one colour. There are four or five of them in this head, and the whole trick is that you cannot count them.
The range
Silver, copper, ash, blue-black.
This is the argument. Eight heads, eight directions, no house style laid over any of them. Having one would be easier.
Before & after
Before, and then what she made of it.
Drag any of them. Left is what walked in, right is what walked out, all of them her own clients in her own chair. She put the first one up to be judged at the One Shot Awards.
Shoulder-length and flat, then long enough to move. The same mauve top, the same brick wall.
A collarbone bob, and then hair past the waist. The red sweater is the only thing in the frame that stayed the same.
Straw blonde, and then the deepest brunette on this page. Going that far down is the hardest direction to take a head of hair, and it is the one nobody photographs.
Thin at the ends, then heavy the whole way down. Ribboned blonde drawn through a deeper base, so the length reads as hers.
Ash, kept cold all the way to the ends. The hardest blonde to hold and the first one to go brassy on somebody else.
Black, and still not flat. There is a shape cut into this that only shows when it moves.
The house
She built the room she works in.
The Beauty Scene is Maria’s. Her name, her lease, her rules. She could have worked it alone and instead filled it with three more women, which is why the client who gets turned away everywhere else, the curly one especially, has somewhere to go inside the same building.

Why Maria is here
She colours the hair before it ever goes in.
We go looking ourselves, city by city, for the artists we’d send a friend to. Maria is our San Jose pick for colour.
Almost everybody in this trade orders extension hair by number and hopes it lands close enough. Maria treats it the way a painter treats pigment. She mixes to the head in front of her, 150 grams at eighteen inches, custom-coloured, and only then builds the row. It costs her more and it takes longer. It is also why you cannot find the join.
The range is the thing that gives her away. Icy silver. A copper you could read by. Blue-black with a shape cut into it that only shows when it moves. And ash held cold all the way to the ends, which is the hardest blonde there is to hold and the first one to turn on somebody less good.
She works out of a house with her own name behind it, both sleeves on show, doing it in the order she thinks is right. Her clients have left her 109 five-star reviews for the trouble.
- Colour is half of it Her own profile leads Extensions + Color, in that order, with the plus sign doing the work. The colour is where she starts.
- Custom-coloured wefts 150 grams, 18 inches, mixed to the head in front of her. She posts the spec.
- She enters her work One of the transformations further down this page went into the Behind the Chair One Shot Awards. Most artists never put theirs up to be judged at all.
- Her own house The Beauty Scene is hers. Three more women work under the roof, a curl specialist and an esthetician among them.
What Maria works in
Four ways in, and she will tell you which one is yours.
Beaded wefts, k-tips, tape-ins and V-Light. The method is a decision made about your hair in the consultation, not a thing you pick off a list beforehand.
K-tips & bonds

Individual strands bonded to your hair. There’s no row to hide, so ponytails and updos are easy. Maria installs these at $175. Plan on most of a day in the chair.
- Best for
- Updos, flexibility
- Wear
- 3–4 months
Tape-ins

Pre-taped wefts sandwiched around your own hair. Fastest to apply and usually the cheapest way in. They show more in very fine hair and need re-taping regularly.
- Best for
- Medium hair, first-timers
- Move-up
- Every 6–8 weeks
Hand-tied wefts

A weft sewn onto a row of beads across the head. The most hair added in the fewest hours, and the flattest against the scalp. This is the one her whole menu is built around.
- Best for
- Volume, thick hair
- Move-up
- Every 6–8 weeks
The feed
@hairbymariarepettoEvery photograph on this page came off her Instagram, shot between clients and posted through the week. It is the most current record of the work: new colour, fresh installs, hair four months on.
If you want to know what you’ll walk out with, that is the place to look before you book.
