The Art of the Takedown

Serwa Collins

Founder, UNDO Braid & Extensions Takedown Studio

Every braid and sew-in ends in a takedown, and doing your own means hours with your arms up and scissors too close to your hair. Serwa Collins built a whole studio for that one appointment. Fourteen years in hair care, from Bronner Brothers to African Pride, went into UNDO, the Sandy Springs takedown studio where nobody rushes and some clients sleep through it.

  • 14 years in the hair care industry
  • One specialty: the takedown
  • Six days a week, Monday to Saturday
  • Voyage ATL in the press

The ritual

UNDO takes hair down, and never in a hurry.

“We value our clients’ time, but never at the expense of their hair’s integrity. At UNDO, we work efficiently, gently, and with intention—never rushing the process.”

Serwa Collins

Some clients fall asleep in the chair, and Serwa counts that among the studio’s proudest moments: “There’s something special about watching a woman become comfortable enough around people she just met to completely relax and rest.”

Serwa’s stylists have seen clients cry after a takedown because they felt so cared for. By the time a woman sits down, she has usually spent weeks pouring into everyone else. Here it is her turn to receive. She should leave lighter, in Serwa’s words, “ready to take on the world…and, of course, her next hairstyle.”

One phone call changed how Serwa sees the work. An older woman rang to say thank you. What is a luxury for some, she said, is a necessity for others: women with arthritis or limited mobility cannot keep their arms raised long enough to take down their own hair. “We’re not just removing hairstyles,” Serwa says. “We’re meeting a need, restoring dignity, and caring for women.”

  • Takedowns only Braids, twists, locs, sew-ins, micro links and crochet come out here, and nothing goes in.
  • A full team Serwa leads a team of stylists who do one thing, and do it gently.
  • Sized at the chair Every appointment opens with a quick sizing braid test against UNDO’s swatch ring, so the booking matches the braids.
  • Two studios Sandy Springs came first. A second UNDO is now open in Mableton.

The founder

The salon Serwa wished existed.

It started with sew-ins. Taking them out alone risked a cut or damaged hair, so every takedown waited until friends or family got off work. “Someone needs to open a salon that specializes solely in takedowns,” Serwa remembers thinking. “And God spoke to me just as plainly as day: ‘Serwa, I gave you the vision for a reason. You do it.’”

The craft came first. Serwa’s career began at Bronner Brothers and continued at African Pride. Along the way came a deep knowledge of textured hair and of protecting the integrity of natural hair. “God taught me to trust the direction,” Serwa says, “and my career taught me to respect the craft.”
